Hey friend,

Welcome back to The Mission Briefing, your weekly newsletter where I provide actionable insights, food for thought, curated recommendations, and more.

Today at a glance:

  • Food for thought: Magic pills

  • Quote: Tyranny

  • Health tips: How to save $200 on supplements

  • Book: It’s Good to Be a Man

  • Social Media: Fighting Shadows Trailer

🧠 Food For Thought:

Imagine there was a pill that reduced anxiety and smashed depression, improved your focus and elevated your mood, helped you sleep like a rock, caused you to lose weight, have better sex, and guaranteed you lived longer while ensuring your parenting improved. Oh, and it’s 100% free and has no known side effects.

That incredible pill actually exists…

It’s called “exercise.”

✍️ Quote Of The Week:

As we approach another election cycle, I felt it best to remind everyone that if it begins to look at all the way the last one did, the following quote from Mr. Lewis is of the utmost importance to keep in mind:

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive.

💪 Health & Fitness Tips:

Here are a few ways to swap out common supplements with real-life activities or food to not only save money but reap even greater benefits from the real things:

Replace your multivitamin with beef - Eating grass-fed beef is one of the best ways to get the vitamins and minerals you need. Muscle meat from beef is great source of Vitamin B12, Zinc, Selenium, Niacin, Riboflavin, Pantothenate, Iron, Phosphorus, Vitamin B6, Choline, and more. If you add in beef organs, you’ll take this to a whole new level. Here’s what 4 ounces of beef liver looks like:

Replace Nootropics/Brain Supplements with eggs and blueberries - Egg yolks are a good source of choline, which is associated with reducing inflammation and promoting brain function, like maintaining memory and communications between brain cells. Blueberries have antioxidant polyphenols called Anthocyanins which reduce oxidative stress and help improve brain health and memory.

Replace Collagen protein with ground beef - Depending on where you source your ground beef from and how much connective tissue the butcher has in your ground (which is usually a decent amount) you could get up to a 25% ratio of collagen. If you eat a healthy amount of beef each day (as you should) that would supply the same amount of collagen protein and the same amount of the amino acid glycine that is typically in a supplement powder.

Replace Vitamin D3 with 15-60 minutes of sunshine - In the Spring and Summer, 15 minutes in the sun with ~25% of your body exposed can create over 1,000 IU of natural Vitamin D, so long as you’re not wearing sunscreen. (And I recommend skipping sunglasses too. Read MB #055: Sunburns, 10x, spanking, and what matters most for details) This means if you’re like me and spend an hour minimum in the sun every day through the Spring and Summer, you’re getting 4,000+ IU of vitamin D!

Replace your pre-workout supplement with coffee - Although there are some benefits to some of the additional compounds in a pre-workout - especially if you have lofty goals of packing on muscle and optimizing your performance - if I were you, I would maximize my own natural output first and let the supplements be a bonus later if needed. The caffeine in coffee will reduce the sense of fatigue and pain from exercise, help with releasing fat to be burned, and more. Once you’re an experienced lifter and have reached a plateau that you’re unable to break through, consider a pre-workout drink. Personally, I have used only black coffee while training in a fasted state for years. It takes a little getting used to but once you do it’s amazing!

Replace your probiotic with grass-fed Kefir - Kefir is made through fermenting milk but is done in a way that makes it far more beneficial than yogurt. Kefir contains up to 60+ strains of bacteria and yeast making it a super rich and diverse probiotic source. The strain Lactobacillus kefiri is unique to kefir and has demonstrated its ability to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria including Salmonella, Helicobacter pylori, and E. coli. and in my opinion, means your probiotic is far inferior.

Replace your postworkout protein shake with raw cow milk - A great blend of both casein and whey protein, healthy fats, natural carbs (complete with the lactose enzyme that’s supposed to accompany it - usually destroyed in the pasteurization process), and other beneficial components such as lactoferrin. Consumption of raw cow milk even stimulates the production of IGF-1 which helps improve skeletal muscle regeneration and contributes to muscle hypertrophy (enlargement).

📚 Book Recommendation:

It’s Good To Be A Man - If there’s anything our world needs clarity on it’s what Biblical masculinity looks like and how to help boys and men grab hold of the vision for it and pursue it with vigor. Through this book, Michael Foster straight up delivers that.

"Hard times make real men. In an age when masculinity is attacked from every angle, leading to a generation at equal turns passive and belligerent, Michael Foster and Bnonn Tennant have given us a manifesto for manhood. This is a clarion call. It stands out all the more for the lack of such clear speech and precise biblical teaching in evangelical circles today. It's Good to Be a Man anchors men in the Word, in the grace of God, in the truth. This is one of the best books on manhood ever written, period."

-Owen Strachan, Provost, Grace Bible Theological Seminary

📱 Social Media Favorites:

How To Become A Man of Valor - This week’s YouTube video is a continuation of last week’s video talking about how to BECOME a man of danger and self-control.

Fighting Shadows Promo - My friends Jon and Jeff have written an amazing new book that will be released in May. The book continues this tone of this video and will be one of the best books for men that has been released in the last decade or two.

Oceans by Luke Silva - I literally just stumbled across this video in my feed. No idea who Luke was before this, and I tend to be more of a Shane & Shane kind of guy than a Hillsong Worship kind of guy, but this version of Oceans was an absolute blessing.

Pray Over Your Work by Charles Spurgeon - Spurgeon says “Nine times out of ten, falling away from God begins in the neglect of private prayer.” I really enjoyed how this post laid out super practical ways to pray for real things, in a real way, to a God who invited us
