Your First TeamDec 24, 2021
There’s this way to view scripture called “the law of first mention”. It says essentially, that wherever a concept is first introduced in scripture, it is likely one of the purest forms of the concept and helps shape our understanding of it as we encounter it throughout the rest of the story.
Genesis 1:27-28 tells us A LOT about family. It reads: “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”
When God had created mankind and given them work to do of going into the untamed world outside the garden and bringing order out of chaos, he created a family to do it. He’s God, He could have created literally anything out of thin air to accomplish the mission and He chose a family.
Later Abraham enters the story, and similarly, God chooses yet again, a multigenerational family as the source of blessing to the whole world.
The family idea is all over scripture and always points towards the fulfillment of God’s purposes on earth. The family appears as a vehicle of blessing, economic support, community impact, training up of the generations, etc.
God makes it clear that people’s first line of mission-centered organizations that he intends to use for accomplishing his purpose on the earth is family. Not businesses, not institutional churches, not non-profits, etc.
Our family is our FIRST team. Not our work teams or our church/ministry teams. The family team should get first (not only) dibs on our focus, gifting, skills, and energy. We are to coach, lead, train, love, support, and resource our family with the intent of them being the first line of action in God’s redemptive story and plan.
